Overview
Vital upgrades have been made to the Hope Valley Line, improving capacity and reliability for passengers and freight travelling between Sheffield and Manchester.
Several bottlenecks have now been removed on the line. This means passenger services will now be able to overtake slower freight. The upgrade has also improved the reliability of the line’s assets, making it more resilient to any potential disruption.
Track installation and drainage works have been carried out in the Dore and Totley area. For example, the Dore South Curve has been extended, doubling the number of tracks serving the station. Engineers have also built Dore and Totley a new platform and extended the existing one to make room for longer trains.
A modern signalling system has also been installed, which will now be controlled from York Rail Operating Centre. This new signalling system has replaced old mechanical equipment, further boosting the line’s reliability.
The re-control of the signalling system to York ROC has also meant the boundary between North and East Route and North-West and Central has shifted 10 miles west, giving us more railway to manage and maintain.

Jamie Walker
Jamie has worked for Story Contracting for over 20 years and is accountable for the delivery of Engineering Compliance for all rail projects within the England region. In additional to Jamie’s early involvement on the Hope Valley Project, Jamie is also responsible for design and engineering management on LNW earthworks, structures and properties schemes within the workbank together with other tendered and awarded works.

Tom Adamson
Tom joined Story Contracting in September 2022 and worked as senior project engineer for Story Contracting, working on the Hope Valley Project. On this project, Tom was involved with bridge and culvert extensions, soil nail reinforced cuttings work, station upgrade scheme including access for all footbridge, new island platform and platform extension. Prior to joining Story Contracting, Tom worked for Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure for 7 years on the Werrington Grade Separation and Hatton Road North Junction Highway Improvement projects.

Dominic Mills
Dominic has 9 years construction/rail experience in project engineering and contractor management. Dominic joined Story Contracting in September 2022 where he has been employed on the Hope Valley Project as CRE (Construction) and Temporary Works Co-ordinator (TWC). Prior to joining Story Constructing, Dominic worked for Transport for Greater Manchester for 2.5 years as Project Engineering Lead / Designated Project Engineer for renewals and enhancement framework projects.
