Overview

The structural engineering process for buildings includes robustness design. Central to this is a decision process around consequence classes which provides guidance for the engineer as to what level of robustness design should be incorporated into the building structure.

Robustness design is fundamentally, a design against a possible accidental event that, although not common place, may result in a building that is for that event unreasonable structurally unsafe for the occupants; or in structural engineering terms, disproportionate to the cause. The forgotten accident in the engineer’s vocabulary is fire.

This talk presents the background to robustness design in fire for structural timber buildings.
