Overview

The enabling works for the new Islay vessels, managed by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), involved significant infrastructure upgrades at three key ferry terminals: Kennacraig, Port Askaig, and Colonsay. This initiative was to upgrade the facilities to accommodate the new Islay vessels - MV Isle of Islay and MV Loch Indaal. The upgrades at the three ports include dredging, new quay walls, pier strengthening works, fender upgrades, facilities for shore power and, at Port Askaig, provision of a mooring aid structure.

The presentation, undertaken jointly by Client CMAL, Designer & Project Manager, Mott MacDonald, and Principal Contractor, George Leslie Ltd, describes:

  • An overview of the New Islay Vessels Enabling Works.
  • The collaborative design development and project delivery undertaken by CMAL, Mott MacDonald & George Leslie to meet tight project deadlines.
  • Principal features of the Permanent Works Design.
  • The major Temporary Works involved and their interface with the permanent design.
  • Project planning and stakeholder engagement, which maintained the lifeline ferry service and minimised disruption to local communities.
