Overview

This presentation, organised by the ICE Glasgow and West of Scotland branch, will provide an overview of the history of the Kincardine Bridge, which is a Listed Building, and explain the background to the project. The design of the viaduct replacement will be discussed, as well as the challenging construction of both the temporary and permanent works.

Nick Forbes (BEAR Scotland) will provide an introduction, an overview of the bridge history and explain the need for the replacement scheme.

Cameron Coupar (Jacobs) will describe the design of the new construction including articulation of the spans, and the constraints imposed by Listed Building Consent.

Craig Hunter (Balfour Beatty) will discuss the temporary works solutions, and explain the engineering challenges and solutions during construction.

Nick Forbes

Nick is a bridge specialist with 18 years’ experience whose role is South East Major Bridges Manager for BEAR Scotland, a position he has held since 2022.

He previously undertook various bridge engineering roles including NE Bridges Manager within BEAR Scotland and has worked as a structural engineer on modifications to existing offshore assets in the Oil & Gas sector, as well as gaining bridge design experience in the rail sector.

Cameron Coupar

Cameron is a senior engineer with Jacobs with over 8 years industry experience in bridge design and construction.

He has worked on a variety of small and large bridge projects including two years spent working as design site representative on Stockingfield Bridge, which won the ICE People Choice award 2022.  

Since May 2024, Craig has occupied the role of structures lead for Kincardine Bridge providing technical support to BEAR Scotland’s site team.

Craig is the Project Manager with Balfour Beatty for the Kincardine Bridge project and has 13 years of industry experience, working within the highway and energy sectors.

 He has worked on various key infrastructure projects including M74 Extension, M8 J4a, AWPR and A85/A9 improvements in Scotland.
