Overview

A presentation on the Kishorn Port Expansion Project. This is a £42 million expansion project which will prepare Kishorn Port to play a pivotal role in delivery of offshore wind projects in Scotland and elsewhere.

Kishorn Port is situated on the west coast of Scotland and has clients in the oil and gas, decommissioning and aquaculture sectors, as well as some development phase activities associated with offshore wind projects.

Kishorn Port Limited (KPL) received planning permission in 2013 for a port masterplan specifically focused on the provision of expanded infrastructure for offshore wind. The port is actively engaging with different contractors and developers on the use of the port to support off-shore wind projects, these include: ScotWind, innovation and targeted gas (INTOG), as well as engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contractors, and other partners.

The Kishorn Port Upgrade Project will provide significantly expanded infrastructure which can be used for fixed and floating offshore wind projects in multiple locations over the long term. The port upgrade will provide greater areas of laydown land for manufacturing and deeper water berthing which will increase the port’s capability to berth deeper draft vessels and structures associated with offshore wind development.

The Kishorn Port Upgrade Project will complement the existing dry dock facility, wet mooring storage areas and other existing port infrastructure. The port benefits from a deep-water location (up to 100 metre water depth) with relevant licensing in the loch already available for wet storage and slip-forming of turbine structures. The port also has an aggregate quarry with 6.5mt of reserves suitable for concrete manufacturing with additional volumes readily available if required.

The investment will provide a strategic port facility on the west coast which can make a significant contribution to the realisation of Scotland’s offshore wind ambitions and the achievement of Scotland’s net zero targets and energy security. The upgraded facility with manufacturing also has the potential to serve offshore wind development within the wider United Kingdom and Europe.

Kishorn Port Ltd managing director Alasdair Ferguson started his career at Ferguson Transport in 1978. After progressing through the company he took on the role of managing director in 1997. Through organic growth and acquisition, he has developed one of the largest well-respected, award-winning logistics and marine services providers in the Highlands and Islands. In 1999, Alasdair helped to secure Kishorn Port as the base for Ferguson Transport and Shipping to serve the needs of the aquaculture industry.

In 2008, Alasdair was one of the co-founders for establishing Kishorn Port Ltd (KPL), a fifty-fifty joint venture between Ferguson Transport (Spean Bridge) Ltd and Leiths (Scotland) Ltd. Since KPL’s creation, Kishorn Yard and the Dry Dock have been re-established and brought back into use as a major facilities for the decommissioning, maintenance and inspection of floating marine oil and gas assets and the manufacturing, assembly and distribution of renewable energy components.

Alasdair, along with his fellow directors, has been key to driving KPL’s vision for the future and the expansion plans to the Port and Dry Dock to accommodate larger vessels, laydown, and potential for the manufacturing of concrete sub-structures for the offshore floating wind industry.
