London Power Tunnels (LPT) is National Grid’s £1bn investment to ensure a continued safe and secure supply of electricity to the capital, by rewiring London via underground tunnels. This talk will focus on LPT Phase 2 and the 32.5km of tunnel and 8 shafts constructed as part of Package 2 “Tunnels and Shafts”. The speakers from National Grid, HMJV, and WSP will outline and discuss the significant achievements realised, challenges overcome, and the ultimate success to date of this significant project.
With tunnel boring machine (TBM) removal from a live NG site, mobilisation during COVID, contamination, historic obstructions, and challenging groundwater conditions there was plenty to keep the team occupied. They still found time however to use Modern Methods of Construction to drive efficiency, cement free concrete, InSAR, artificial intelligence tools, and trial automated ring build. All this whilst engendering a pro-active health, safety and wellbeing culture, as well as leaving a positive legacy with the local communities.
All design and construction milestones have been delivered on or ahead of programme, and the project remains on budget, a testament to the Project 13 principles adopted by the team.

A Joint Venture formed by two of the foremost infrastructure specialists Hochtief UK Construction and J. Murphy and Sons. The UK’s National Grid has agreed a six-year contract with Hochtief-Murphy Joint Venture (HMJV) to deliver the tunnelling and shaft work of the second phase of its London Power Tunnels (LPT2) project in a contract worth around £400m.

Following an early career background in civil engineering, Mark has worked in a project management capacity for National Grid for the last 12 years, delivering major infrastructure projects in the Electricity Transmission business. He has worked on London Power Tunnel 2 (LPT2) since late 2019 and is currently responsible for leading 3 of the 5 main packages of works under the LPT2 Enterprise (including the tunnels and shafts package); building on experience gained from delivery roles on the first phase of London Power Tunnels (LPT1) and substation projects in North London.

Simon is a Chartered Civil Engineer and leads WSP’s tunnelling team in Guildford. He has 33 years of experience in the feasibility, design and construction supervision of tunnels.
He has specialised in the utility tunnel market having been responsible for the successful delivery of over 100 kilometres of cable tunnel projects in London. In addition to cable tunnels, Simon has had various roles on HS2, the Northern Line Extension, Dublin Metro, Dublin Port Tunnel, the Portsmouth & Havant Wastewater Transfer Tunnel and the A55 Pen-Y-Clip tunnel.
Simon has been supporting National Grid on the London Power Tunnels 2 project since 2017 having worked on the initial feasibility study for the project in 2006 and has seen the project through to the successful completion of all tunnelling work on site.

Raj is technical lead for HMJV, for both Package 2: Tunnels and Shafts and Package 5: Headhouses and M&E contracts on LPT Phase 2. He’s had oversight of programme, risk, design, engineering and digital aspects – as well as project mobilisation during the Covid-19 period.
He has worked as part of HOCHTIEF-MURPHY Joint Venture since 2010 in a variety of pre-construction and delivery roles, including being responsible for HMJV’s bids for London Power Tunnels Phase 2 and programme management in HMJV’s successful delivery of the Crossrail C310 Thames Tunnels.
