PAS 2080: shaping the future of infrastructure sustainability

Mark Hansford

With a background in both civil engineering and journalism, Mark Hansford has spent more than 25 years as a specialist in disseminating infrastructure knowledge.

After leaving the University of Birmingham with an MEng in 1997, he began his career as an engineer with AtkinsRéalis, where he conducted water supply and distribution analyses, including an asset condition study covering the 100 largest urban water schemes in Ghana.

In 2000, Hansford joined New Civil Engineer magazine, where he progressed through a series of roles. As editor from 2014 to 2020, he led its relaunch as a monthly title publishing daily digital news.

An ICE Fellow, Hansford then served the institution for nearly six years as its director of engineering knowledge. He now works with several organisations seeking to share knowledge, stimulate discussion and enable action to improve the performance of the UK infrastructure sector.

Mark Crouch

Mark Crouch is Mott MacDonald’s Global Decarbonisation Discipline Lead and an MSc qualified carbon management and sustainability leader with over 18 years’ experience. Mark has led Mott MacDonald’s PAS2080 verification process since 2018, where on an annual basis the global business is independently verified for conformity with the specification, with the business being one of the first organisations to be verified using the major 2023 update. Mark has also led PAS2080 implementation and assessment projects for a range of clients internationally and brings experience from leading greenhouse gas assessments on major and high-profile projects and programmes. 

Eng. Ahmad AbuYousef

Eng. Ahmad AbuYousef CEng is a sustainability specialist at Sustainable Water Solutions (SWS) and responsible for companywide sustainability matters related to energy optimisation, GHG emissions, water use and waste management. In his previous role at SWS as a project manager in the Engineering Division he was involved in the SWS PAS2080 journey from the start. His background is in mechanical engineering, and he has 18 years of experience in large scale wet infrastructure projects in Abu Dhabi with SWS and Parsons International.

Dr Titia de Mes

Dr. Titia de Mes is the sustainability manager at Sustainable Water Solutions Company (SWS) and is responsible for driving SWS’s implementation of sustainable and long-term solutions that will aid the Emirate’s transition to a sustainable and circular economy. She has been actively involved in ensuring PAS2080 compliancy and execution within the company.

Previously she worked with Stantec, Arcadis and WS Atkins in the UAE and Royal HaskoningDHV and Lettinga Associates Foundation based out of the Netherlands but involved in many projects abroad. She is an environmental engineer with over 25 years’ experience holds a PhD focusing on the removal of micropollutants from the Dutch Wageningen University and Research (WUR).

Diego Padilla-Philipps

As a decarbonisation lead Diego works towards creating zero carbon buildings to address the climate emergency. Over the last 4 years Diego has led the creation of WSP’s Structures decarbonisation roadmap and delivered on its commitment. He has driven transformational change across eleven regions and upskilled more than 300 engineers who lead over 500 projects every year.

Diego’s current focus is on digital innovation, harvesting the power of AI to create tools and processes that help engineers, designers and clients to create better buildings. As a structural engineer his experience varies from tall building design to complex basements, from office refurbishments to luxury hotels. He was the lead engineer for the design and delivery of 22 Bishopsgate in London.
