Overview
The proposed reclamation at Tuas Finger 1 is the first of the four ‘fingers’ of the new Tuas super port. Finger 1 is creating approximately 3.5km of wharf structure using concrete caissons. WSP were working as the contractor’s designer to deliver the caisson foundation and structural works.
Engineering in the Jurong Formation, a series of sedimentary rocks, is particularly challenging due to the highly variable nature of the material due to its deposition and geological history.
Understanding this material was key for the success of the project with focus on managing the geotechnical risk associated with engineering in this material and mitigating the effects of water softening and its susceptibility to slaking.
This project was one of the first major infrastructure projects in Singapore to be wholly designed and constructed in accordance with Eurocode structural design standards. The opportunity was also taken to revisit some of the design and analysis approaches, particularly undertaking limit state geotechnical design using FEM and LEM analysis. Additionally, considering the durability of concrete and control of cracking has meant that further material savings could be made during the detailed design.
This webinar outlines WSP’s involvement in the project and how they were able to use technical expertise to optimise the design, reduces cost and increase productivity.
