Llyn Tegid is located in the Snowdonia National Park and is Wales' largest natural lake measuring 5 miles long and half a mile at its widest point. Part of the Dee Regulation Scheme and of international importance, Llyn Tegid plays a vital role in regulating flows and flood attenuation whilst offering a haven for people and wildlife.
Registered as a large-raised reservoir with 3km of embankments protecting the town of Bala, Llyn Tegid can hold over 21 million cubic metres of water when full, the equivalent of 8,400 Olympic sized swimming pools. Following recommendations by the All-Reservoirs Panel Engineer (ARPE), large-scale safety works are currently underway by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to make sure Llyn Tegid remains safe from extreme weather in the long term.
This presentation is to hear the latest from site including from the client NRW, the contractor William Hughes Civil Engineering Ltd and the designer Binnies UK Ltd. The speakers will cover the engineering principles in play, the challenges overcome and the wider social and environmental benefits being delivered for the community. Working under stringent regulatory deadlines and with a risk of criminal, civil and reputational consequences, the speakers will highlight the importance of team ethos and maximising opportunities in programme efficiency and minimising carbon. The speakers will finish with a look ahead to works being completed throughout the remainder of 2022.
