Overview
Join the ICE North Nottinghamshire North Derbyshire (NNND) Branch and speaker, Bill Tomson, for a webinar looking into the repairing, restoration and reopening of the Grade II* listed Bennerley Viaduct as it is made accessible for public use.
Bennerley Viaduct is a 430-metre-long wrought iron viaduct on the Nottinghamshire/ Derbyshire border, built in 1877 to carry the Great Northern Railway line over the Erewash Valley. It is an outstanding example of the railway architecture of its time. Today, it survives in an almost unaltered state and has been awarded Grade II* listing, as one of only two wrought iron viaducts left in the UK.
This webinar will focus on a brief history of the viaduct, closure of the line and the threat. The speaker will also discuss how Bennerley Viaduct was saved from demolition and subsequently restored for walking and cycling.
The repair and restoration works were carried out in 2020 and currently works are well underway to enable the public to access onto and across the viaduct, including the construction of a new ramped path and the installation of a new deck.
