Overview

As part of its national Visual Impact Provision programme, National Grid are working towards removing some of the most visually impactful overhead lines in AONBs and National Parks. The Snowdonia VIP project forms part of this programme of works. In the Eryri National Park, National Grid are constructing a cable tunnel to allow the removal of 10 pylons and 3.4km of overhead line which spans the estuary near Portmeirion, allowing the 400kV replacement cables to be placed in a tunnel deep under the estuary improving the appearance of this important estuary.

The Project involves the design and construction of:

  • 3.4km tunnel of 3.5m diameter connecting 2 new shafts at Garth and Cilfor.
  • 2 new headhouses at each Shaft.
  • Construction of one new sealing end compound and reconfiguration and extension of an existing sealing end compound.
  • Two high voltage (HV) electrical circuits.
  • Electrical circuits connected at one end to a reconfigured Garth Sealing End Compound (SEC) and at the other end to the new Cilfor SEC.

HOCHTIEF UK have been appointed as the design and construct contractor for these works, supported by AECOM for the detailed design for the tunnels, shafts headhouses, and M&E systems. This presentation will outline the need for the project, the project constraints, design considerations, and construction methodologies for the scheme.
