As part of its national Visual Impact Provision programme, National Grid are working towards removing some of the most visually impactful overhead lines in AONBs and National Parks. The Snowdonia VIP project forms part of this programme of works. In the Eryri National Park, National Grid are constructing a cable tunnel to allow the removal of 10 pylons and 3.4km of overhead line which spans the estuary near Portmeirion, allowing the 400kV replacement cables to be placed in a tunnel deep under the estuary improving the appearance of this important estuary.

HOCHTIEF UK have been appointed as the design and construct contractor for these works, supported by AECOM for the detailed design for the tunnels, shafts headhouses, and M&E systems. This presentation will outline the need for the project, the project constraints, design considerations, and construction methodologies for the scheme.

Senior Project Manager
Steve Ellison is a senior project manager working for National Grid and is a champion for safe delivery of major infrastructure projects with over 30 years of major project delivery experience. He has recently completed the World recording breaking River Humber pipeline replacement project that involved the design and construction of a 5km estuary tunnel.
The challenges faced during the Humber project and lessons learnt have been key to the development of the Eryri VIP project.

Stephan Assenmacher is head of technical services tunnelling for HOCHTIEF Technical Competence Center. He is a mining engineer and has been working for over 30 years in the construction industry delivering TBM tunnel projects in all diameter ranges.
His previous National Grid tunnel experience has included the Feeder 9 Replacement Project and the London Power Tunnels Phase 2.
For Snowdonia VIP, Stephan is HOCHTIEF TCC’s senior construction manager for the TBM design and tunneling works, supporting the HOCHTIEF UK Project Team on site from the Head Office in Essen, Germany.

Steve Woodrow is head of tunnelling for AECOM. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer and has worked for over 30 years in the design and construction of tunnel projects.
His previous National Grid cable tunnel experience has included the Elstree to St. Johns Wood Cable Tunnel, the Lower Lea Valley Cable Tunnels, and the ongoing London Power Tunnels. For Snowdonia VIP, Steve is AECOM’s project director for the detailed design, supporting Hochtief.
