Overview

National Grid's Grain to Tilbury project forms part of the Great Grid Upgrade, delivering a new 2.2 km, 400 kV cable tunnel beneath the Thames between Tilbury and Gravesend. It replaces the 1960s Thames Cable Tunnel and reinforces electricity transmission between Kent and Essex.

Following the construction of the shafts using Europe’s largest vertical shaft sinking machine (VSM), the ~4.7m diameter Herrenkencht MixShield tunnel boring machine recently reached the half-way mark of its tunnel drive in chalk.

Delivered by representatives from the National Grid and Ferrovial BEMO Joint Venture (FB JV), this event provides an overview of the scheme, its construction, and associated challenges and solutions.

Following the lecture, there will be a networking session in the ICE Kendal's bar.
