Overview

Eftychia “Effie” Koursari is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Technical Director at Amey, where she leads the national capability for scour. She is an internationally recognised expert in scour and infrastructure resilience, with a track record of delivering innovative solutions to manage climate‑driven risk in safety‑critical assets.
Eftychia has founded and developed specialist capability in scour and climate resilience, shaping service delivery, technical standards, and strategic direction across infrastructure portfolios. She has contributed to CIRIA SP171, the UK’s national scour manual, and has provided international advisory following major extreme‑weather events, reflecting global recognition of her expertise.

Alongside her technical leadership, she plays a prominent role in shaping the wider profession. She is Chair of the University of Glasgow’s Industrial Advisory Board, an Associate Editor and Editorial Board Member for the Proceedings of the ICE: Bridge Engineering, a member of the ICE Scotland Policy and External Affairs Group, and a member of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) Climate Emergency Group.

She is also a committed mentor and advocate for developing future engineering leaders, including founding and leading initiatives to support progression to professional recognition and fellowship.

Her contributions have been widely recognised through a range of honours, including the IWICE Inspirational Leader - Consultant Award (2025), IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year WES Prize, ICE Scotland Sustainability Champion, Amey Centenary Excel Award, being named among the Top 50 Women in Engineering (Sustainability) and a WLA Rising Star in STEM. She has also been recognised by the Royal Academy of Engineering and Transport for London as an “Engineering Icon”, featured on a reimagined London Underground map in which Sloane Square station was named after her to mark National Engineering Day.
