Celebrating Diverse Cultures in Project Delivery

It is increasingly common for project delivery teams to be geographically dispersed, bringing together people from different countries, time zones, professional backgrounds and cultures. Digital technology has made it possible for organisations to build project teams around expertise rather than geography, allowing the right people to contribute regardless of where they are located.

While this brings significant opportunities, it also introduces challenges. Different cultures can influence how people communicate, make decisions, approach hierarchy, manage conflict, give feedback and understand leadership. Even seemingly straightforward behaviours — such as how directly someone communicates, whether they feel comfortable challenging a senior colleague, or how they interpret deadlines — can vary considerably between cultures.

For project professionals, recognising these differences is not about stereotyping individuals or assuming that everyone from a particular culture will behave in the same way. Rather, it is about developing cultural intelligence: the ability to recognise that people may have different perspectives and working practices, and to adapt our approach so that everyone has the opportunity to contribute effectively.

The Yorkshire & Humber region provides a particularly interesting context for exploring these themes. The region has a rich history of migration, international trade, manufacturing, engineering, education and cultural exchange. Its towns and cities have been shaped by people from many different communities and backgrounds, creating a diverse workforce and a wealth of cultural experience.
