Overview

Infrastructure is central to the way communities around the world live their lives.

Transport supports us getting to work, digital infrastructure globally connects us for both work and home, and water and energy help us to meet our basic needs.

Infrastructure is fundamental in supporting communities to thrive, boosting social unity and economic mobility.  However, not everyone has the same experience and access. For some people, the built environment can provide significant obstacles, limiting their ability to use infrastructure safely.

These barriers are often inadvertently built in by those who design, deliver and operate infrastructure.

As civil and infrastructure professionals, we have a responsibility to ensure that our designs are accessible for everyone who might use them. This is echoed by the UN, whose UNSDG 11 tasked nations to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” by 2030.

Recent years have seen significant progress made against this goal, but there is still a long way to go and infrastructure professionals must continue to learn and improve.

Chaired by ICE President, David Porter, this event brings together experts from Hong Kong and London to share global perspectives on building safer and more inclusive places. We will also discuss cultural and regulatory differences from around the globe, exploring how different communities approach these issues in diverse and innovative ways.

Linked with the new mandatory CPD theme of safety, risk management, and sustainable development for ICE members, this session delivers insights from those working daily to deliver safe and inclusive infrastructure.

Inclusive design benefits everyone, and we all have a role to play in successful delivery.

This event forms the start of a series of international webinars bringing together diverse, global perspectives on key infrastructure issues.
