Overview

The presentation covers the development of the public water supply to the City of York and surrounding area, from the late 17th century, when it started with a very rudimentary supply of river water, through to the comprehensively treated water supply provided at the end of the 20th century.

During that time there were progressive improvements as water treatment techniques developed, as customer expectations rose and as the legislative and regulatory framework for the industry tightened.  As a self-contained organisation, the numerous stages are readily identified, reflecting and illustrating the progress of the water supply industry nationally.  The presentation includes reference to John Smeaton’s active involvement with York Waterworks.
