Overview

Please note that the session will be held from 19:00 to 20:30 HK time on 8th December 2026.

As the built environment increasingly embraces sustainable and nature-positive development, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) have emerged as a critical framework alongside traditional engineering practices. With growing emphasis on ecological resilience, biodiversity enhancement, and human wellbeing, practitioners are now turning their attention to the structured guidelines, performance metrics, and practical methodologies needed to successfully integrate green-blue infrastructure into high-density urban landscapes.

This seminar brings together experts who will explore the Hong Kong Nature-based Solutions Design Guidelines (HKNbSDG) from multiple angles, spanning its three core principles and nine design guidelines, the measurement of NbS performance across environmental and socio-economic indicators, and the use of emerging technologies for digital monitoring. Through these complementary perspectives, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of current practices, from evaluating the "missing half" of social capital to project-level implementation scaling from the Northern Metropolis to micro-interventions in city districts.

The session will also provide a platform for knowledge exchange and professional dialogue through a panel discussion, enabling participants to reflect on how these structured methodologies can be practically applied within Hong Kong’s unique built-environment context. By combining technical design guidelines with practical insights on human impact, this seminar aims to support industry practitioners in advancing more resilient, nature-inclusive, and community-centric development outcomes.

Ash Welch

Ash Welch is an Associate Director and Biodiversity Lead at AECOM Singapore, where he leads biodiversity and nature-based solution work within Singapore and across the wider Asia-Pacific region.

His work spans environmental impact assessment, nature-based solutions design, ecological restoration, natural capital accounting, and biodiversity accounting across terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. Ash focuses on bringing nature into infrastructure and urban development, helping both private and public sector organisations move beyond impact mitigation towards measurable gains for biodiversity and nature more widely.

His practice centres on making nature-based solutions technically robust, quantifiable and investable within urban locations, in relation to infrastructure development, but also natural capital asset management, with the core aim of incentivising the adoption of regenerative solutions.
