Book nowThe built environment has significant potential to improve outcomes for people and nature. Realising that potential requires better decisions about existing systems and future investment.
Last year the Built Environment Connective recommended the Infrastructure Systems Review, to examine how better system understanding can improve important decisions about the built environment and identify the capabilities needed nationally to turn those decisions into effective action.
The recommendation received support from the Infrastructure Client Group, the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority and the Green Construction Board.
Drawing on insights from 15 case studies, the Review will set out practical actions to make outcome-focused decision-making and stewardship standard practice.
On 18 November the case studies will be published at this special launch event - a chance to see how systems thinking is already improving insight, decision-making and outcomes in the built environment.
This group’s key purpose is to accelerate the alignment and improvement of infrastructure delivery and development to benefit the economy, society and the environment.
The Built Environment Connective is all about making connections, connecting people in communities of change, and link systems to positive outcomes.
The National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA) is a UK government public agency uniting long-term infrastructure strategy with project delivery across the UK
The Green Construction Board is a workstream of the Construction Leadership Council. It guides both industry leaders and the UK government on regulatory, technical, and commercial approaches to achieve zero carbon, zero waste, and environmental net gain in buildings and infrastructure.
Institution of Civil Engineers
President
Julie Wood is the 162nd President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, representing the profession in conversations with government, business and society.
A civil and structural engineer and one of 13 Global Fellows at Mott MacDonald, she has led some of the most complex infrastructure projects and programmes.
Her work focuses on improving how infrastructure is considered, planned, designed and delivered through systems thinking, engineering judgement and better decision-making.

Get an inside look at a live infrastructure project during this exclusive site visit. Meet the delivery team, explore the site compound and learn about the civil engineering works being undertaken to improve sustainable travel.

ICE Fellows are invited to join the London Regional Committee for the Winter Fellows Reception. Beth West will be in conversation, reflecting her executive experience on how the UK should think differently about delivering its breathtakingly ambitious £785bn 10-year infrastructure strategy.

Discover how engineers move beyond technical calculations to make sound decisions, challenge assumptions and influence safer outcomes, through practical lessons from civil design assurance in the UK energy sector.
