Overview

Engineering is often taught through calculations, codes, software and technical disciplines that are presented as separate bodies of knowledge. Jim Danial Mohamad's journey into engineering followed a less conventional route. Beginning with a degree in Applied Geology, he first learned to understand the ground through the eyes of an engineering geologist before transitioning into geotechnical engineering, where observations must be transformed into models, designs and decisions.

Since then, his career has taken him through major infrastructure projects, postgraduate study and a yearlong secondment with Tony Gee in the United Kingdom. Today, he has returned to Kuala Lumpur, where he is helping to grow and develop Tony Gee's geotechnical capability while mentoring the next generation of engineers.

In this session, Jim shares lessons drawn from successes, failures, uncertainty and discoveries that no single textbook could fully teach. Drawing from engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, infrastructure design, project delivery and professional development, he reflects on nine recurring skills that consistently underpin engineering problem-solving. While the technical challenges may differ, these are the skills that repeatedly emerge when navigating complexity, making decisions under uncertainty and delivering engineering outcomes.

At its heart, this is a story about learning to see engineering differently. The story told by the ground beneath us. The story hidden within data, investigations and structures. And ultimately, the story we tell ourselves as professionals navigating challenges, setbacks and opportunities throughout our careers. Through real project experiences and personal reflections, participants will gain a fresh perspective on engineering, learning and career development.

The rest of the story? You'll have to join the talk to find out.

Jim Danial Mohamad, P.Geol.

Jim Danial Mohamad Bin Hj Mohamad is a Design Engineer and Professional Geologist (P.Geol.) registered with the Board of Geologists Malaysia (BOG) with over 10 years of experience in engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. He holds a BSc (Hons.) in Applied Geology from the University of Malaya and a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Geotechnical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

Jim began his career as an Engineering Geologist with GCU Consultants, where he contributed to several major infrastructure projects, including the Electrified Double Tracking Project (EDTP), Klang Valley MRT Line 2 (KVMRT2) and Klang Valley Double Track (KVDT). During this period, he developed a strong interest in geotechnical engineering and pursued postgraduate studies to further specialise in the field.

Following completion of his master's degree, Jim joined Tony Gee and Partners in 2021 and has since worked on a wide range of geotechnical and infrastructure projects across Malaysia and the United Kingdom. His experience includes ground investigations, foundation design, earthworks, slope stability assessments, retaining structures, temporary works and geotechnical risk management.

Between 2022 and 2023, Jim undertook a secondment at Tony Gee and Partners' headquarters in Esher, UK, where he gained valuable experience in the application of Eurocode 7, UK railway standards and multidisciplinary infrastructure design.

Upon returning to Malaysia, Jim has played a key role in developing the Kuala Lumpur geotechnical team through technical leadership, mentoring, project delivery, business development and client engagement.

Jim is currently pursuing Chartered Engineer (CEng) qualification through the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). As both a Professional Geologist and Geotechnical Engineer, he advocates sound geotechnical design informed by a thorough understanding of engineering geology, recognising that geological processes and ground conditions are fundamental to the development of safe, practical and cost-effective engineering solutions.
