At this event you'll gain insight into the engineering, design and construction of the major upgrade to Surrey Quays Station, a key interchange on the London overground network.
The upgrade introduced a new station entrance and concourse, enhanced staff facilities, step-free access from street to train, a new lift to platform level, and larger, more accessible platforms.
To deliver these improvements safely and efficiently, the team employed specialist lifting equipment designed for rail environments and developed innovative pre-assembly methodologies that minimised disruption to railway operations and reduced the need for planned closures.
A key challenge was the station's interaction with retaining walls dating back to the 1860s and 1870s. Extensive investigations were undertaken to assess the condition of the historic structures and verify information from original Victorian drawings. You'll learn how temporary works solutions enabled the construction of a 900mm diameter secant pile wall, lift shaft and large steel structures without adversely affecting the surrounding railway assets.
The session will also explore how sustainability objectives shaped the project. Working closely together, lead designer AtkinsRéalis and contractor Morgan Sindall Infrastructure focused on reducing embodied carbon through efficient foundation solutions, optimised material use, lower-carbon concrete mixes, pile reduction strategies and sustainable construction techniques.

This lecture explores how current steel construction standards focus on individual component tolerances but often overlook the cumulative effect of small deviations across entire structures. It discusses the resulting impacts on façades, lift shafts, MEP systems, project costs, and schedules, while …
