A guided tour of the Williamson Tunnels in Liverpool

Overview

The Williamson Tunnels are a remarkable network of brick-arched vaults, chambers and passageways excavated beneath the Edge Hill area of Liverpool in the early 19th century, under the direction of the wealthy tobacco merchant and philanthropist Joseph Williamson (1769–1840). Nicknamed the “Mole of Edge Hill” for his tunnelling activities, Williamson employed large numbers of local men – many of them unemployed ex-servicemen returning from the Napoleonic Wars – to dig tunnels, build brick vaults and construct arches through the sandstone outcrop beneath his land. The true purpose behind the tunnels has never been established, with theories ranging from a philanthropic employment scheme to preparations for a religious apocalypse, making it one of Liverpool’s most enduring historical mysteries.

ICE Merseyside Branch has arranged a guided tour of the tunnels for members, giving attendees the opportunity to explore this remarkable feat of underground construction first-hand and to hear from the expert volunteer guides of the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels about the history, engineering and ongoing excavation of the site.

The tour will visit the Paddington site, taking in the impressive four-storey brick-vaulted chambers, including the cathedral-like Level 4, some 60ft (18m) below street level. Please allow approximately 2 hours for the visit, and wear sensible, sturdy footwear and warm clothing, as the tunnels are cold, uneven underfoot and involve some steps.

Joseph Williamson’s House site is the façade of the old house, which is opposite No 39 Mason Street. Behind the façade is a large area with 3 blue containers. This is Williamson’s House site and where the banqueting hall, sandstone arch, gash, and wine bins are located. 

Important notice: When visiting The Williamson’s Tunnels, please do not follow the brown road signs to “Williamson’s Tunnels” these signs will take you to the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre on Smithdown Lane and not to Friends of Williamson's Tunnels on Mason Street.

The Paddington site is a short walk from Edge Hill railway station, with limited on-street parking nearby.
