Join the ICE West Midlands Birmingham, Solihull and Black Country Branch for a talk on sustainability management in the Midland Metro Alliance (MMA), showing how strong governance, supported by the right procedures and tools can deliver better engineering and ambitious outcomes.
This session will focus on how sustainability can be effectively embedded into major infrastructure delivery, not as an aspiration, but as a practical, measurable part of engineering decision making. The MMA provides a strong example of this approach in practice. From the outset, sustainability was positioned as a core programme value, influencing planning, design and construction across a complex, multi partner alliance.
Rather than being treated as a compliance exercise, sustainability management was used to support better engineering outcomes balancing carbon reduction, resource efficiency, environmental protection and social value alongside cost, programme and buildability. This required close collaboration between client, designers and contractors, supported by clear governance, shared objectives and robust management systems.
The aim of this event is to explore what worked in practice, and discuss how similar approaches can be applied across the wider civil engineering profession.
