Increasing demand has resulted in the design and construction of many new structures in recent years, however this has had to be tempered by the unexpectedly early deterioration of certain of those structures.

This has become a major concern in many countries despite the use of established design and construction practices, with significant expenditure having to be diverted from capital works to the maintenance of those structures.
