The ICE’s director general has praised members for delivering "huge value" to the wider society in 2023 as part of their work with the institution.

This ranges from mentors helping engineers to get professionally qualified to STEM activities encouraging young people into the industry.

“What has struck me in my first year is the passion with which our members view their institution, and the incredible contribution of our dedicated volunteers across the breadth of our work,” wrote Dr Janet Young CBE, ICE director general, in the ICE’s 2023 Annual Report.

‘Dedicated volunteers’ and their achievements

Dr Young thanked all members who volunteer to help deliver the institution’s mission to ensure high-quality engineers who work to build a better society for all.

These include:

  • Professional reviewers, supervising civil engineers, delegated engineers and mentors who supported members on their journey to qualification. They helped to professionally qualify more than 1,700 members in 2023, bringing the total membership to over 97,000.
  • Members on knowledge panels, boards and committees, guided by the ICE council, the pinnacle of the learning society. They helped to develop work that tackles global challenges like climate change and migration, such as the PAS 2080:2023 carbon management in infrastructure guidance.
  • STEM ambassadors who’ve made hundreds of visits to schools and colleges to encourage young people to consider a career in infrastructure. And those who’ve mentored pupils on the award-winning CityZen competition for schoolchildren.
  • ICE Policy Fellows and Community Advisory Board members who shared their specialist expertise on topics including decarbonisation and resilience. They’ve helped to explain issues around infrastructure to the public through their work as media spokespersons.

The report covers the work that took place in Dr Young’s first year in the role as director general.

More information on the activities can be found in the ICE Annual Report 2023.
