Sally Walters was elected at the region’s annual general meeting on 19 October 2023.
Sally Walters, recently elected as ICE South West Committee chair, wants to ensure opportunities are accessible and welcoming to all members.
The election took place at the region’s annual general meeting on 19 October 2023.
Walters, an operations director at Stantec, brings a wealth of experience to the role, including leadership and management skills and expertise in the field of water engineering.
She said: "I'm committed to understanding our regional challenges and fostering an inclusive community for all members.
"Together, we can pave the way for the next generation of engineers, irrespective of their backgrounds, championing diversity, equality, and inclusion."
Strong voice for the region
As a member of the ICE Council, CPD Audit Panel and Water and Sanitation Community Advisory Board, Walters understands the importance of positive regional role models across all the ICE’s activities.
"It's a true privilege to represent the ICE in the South West, providing a strong voice for the region and showcasing our drive and passion for engineering.
"I hope to raise the region’s profile within the institution and shout about the unique contribution of our grassroots city clubs.”
South West regional Future Leaders
Walters has appointed two ICE South West regional Future Leaders to support her aims.
Alex Buley and Meg Ginsberg will contribute to major events and work closely with the region’s network of city clubs to enhance the programme of activities on offer.
Buley, a civil engineer at Mott MacDonald, said: “I hope to use this position to champion greater connectivity between our city clubs and our local communities. I look forward working with the ICE towards better outcomes for the South West."
Ginsberg, an apprentice project manager in the infrastructure team at South West Water, is keen to collaborate for change.
“This is a privileged opportunity to work alongside leading engineers, as well as graduates, technicians, and apprentices,” she said.
“I hope to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and provide opportunities for all, creating a more inclusive and innovative South West.”
Both volunteers will also benefit from mentoring and career development opportunities.
