Council update April 2022
ICE President Ed McCann.

I was delighted to welcome the ICE Council together for our first council meeting of the year in April.

We covered a number of important topics, from electing the Trustee Board to discussing ICE's contribution to getting more young people into engineering and the Learned Society's future plans.

I kicked off the meeting reflecting on some of the conversations I had had with council members to date and introducing some of the changes that we will implement as a result.

These include adding a Presidential Surgery to the council meetings, so council members have a chance to raise any issues they wish, and also ensuring the council is more actively involved in the work of the engineering knowledge team.

ICE has an ambitious plan and it was helpful for us all to get an update on how things were progressing and what is coming up next.

Trustee Board

The council elected the new Trustee Board for 2022-2023, welcoming three new members - Ed Bingham, Matt Colton and Julie Wood.

Liz Waugh was also approved for a further three-year term and David Porter confirmed as ICE vice president from November 2022.

David was elected with a view to becoming ICE president in November 2025, subject to the interim annual election by the council.

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of those who have joined the board and a massive thank you to those who continue to serve. Your advice and guidance are invaluable to the organisation.

ICE’s educational outreach

We are all aware of the skills shortage across the sector and the need to bring younger talent into engineering, something the ICE has been working on for many years.

At the council meeting the director of membership provided an update on the exceptional work his team has been doing to do just that.

Partnering with RAEng, industry, and EngineeringUK, ICE is playing a pivotal role in getting 16–18-year-olds to consider a career in engineering and supporting them when they then get to university.

The presentation provided inspiration but also sparked some ideas from council members who were encouraged to share them with the E&I (Education and Inspiration) Panel for their consideration.

More information on the projects the ICE is working on will be provided on the website, and members are encouraged to get involved where they can.

Learning Society 2022-2023 Programme

As the pinnacle of the ICE’s Learned Society function, council was provided with an update on the Learning Society programme for 2022/23.

The director of engineering knowledge talked through the plan for the next year and highlighted the key opportunities for council to get more involved in shaping some of the insight projects.

Council member Kate Cairns also gave a thought-provoking presentation on the need for ICE to do more on the CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Community Safety) scheme. It was agreed that it would form part of next year’s CPD programme.

We also heard from Heleni Pantelidou and Terry Ellis on PAS2080 (2022 revision) which is due to go out for consultation this month. I would like to encourage all council members to take part in the consultation process.
