Career appraisal

Find out more about the ICE Career Appraisal, including what Career Appraisals are, who they’re for and how to apply.

A Career Appraisal is a way for you to complete the initial professional development (IPD)  stage of your professional qualification. You may also use the Career Appraisal to demonstrate the additional IPD as you progress from one grade of membership to another- for example from IEng MICE to CEng MICE either as a civil or infrastructure engineer.

You will need to show how you have met the attributes at ability level for the grade of membership you have applied for.

You do this by sending us the documents listed below.

How do I apply for a Career Appraisal?

You will need to send us the following documents:

  • A Career Appraisal application form
  • If not a current member, evidence that you have the required qualifications (certified copies)
  • A cover page
  • A 2-page CV
  • A report to demonstrate your experience at IEng MICE or CEng MICE against the attributes as a civil or infrastructure engineer
  • Appendices
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) records
  • A non-refundable fee

You need to highlight how the experience you've gained relates to the attributes at ability level for your preferred grade.

Your application will be assessed by experienced ICE members and ICE staff, who will decide whether your experience means you are ready to apply for Professional Review at your preferred grade. Find out when the submission dates are.

You can get more details about the Career Appraisal, including how to prepare these documents, in our Career Appraisal guidance.

How do I certify my documents?

To certify a photocopy of your certificate, your university lecturer, senior member of your employing company, a solicitor or a corporate ICE member needs to write the following (in blue or black pen directly onto the proof of academic qualification):

“I confirm this to be a true copy of this applicant's qualification.”

They'll also need to provide the following:

  • Signature
  • Name (clearly printed)
  • Date
  • Employing organisation/university or college
  • Position
  • A contact telephone number or email address
  • ICE membership number (if applicable)

To certify an English translation, an official translator, your university lecturer, senior member of your employing company or a corporate ICE member must write the following in blue or black pen directly onto the English translation:

“I hereby certify that I translated this into English and that, to the best of my ability, it is a true and correct translation. I further certify that I am competent in English to render and certify such translation”

“I confirm this to be a true copy of this applicant's qualification”

They'll also need to provide the following:

  • Signature
  • Name (clearly printed)
  • Date
  • Employing organisation/university or college
  • Position
  • A contact telephone number or email address
  • ICE membership number (if applicable)

What happens if I'm not successful?

If the assessors decide that you haven’t given enough evidence to achieve each of the attributes at ability level, you will be asked to provide more information or to meet with your Membership Recruitment Team to discuss your experience before sending the additional information.

What happens if I pass?

If you’re successful, you’ll receive a letter which says you can proceed to the next stage of your qualification – the Professional Review.
