Join the ICE West Midlands Hereford and Worcester Branch to hear more about the long-awaited solution to severe, repeated flooding that has plagued Bewdley in Worcestershire, brought into stark relief by the devastation following Storm Dennis in 2020.
Designed by Arup and delivered by Jackson Civil Engineering for the Environment Agency, the scheme replaces unsustainable temporary barriers with a hybrid permanent and demountable flood risk management asset (FRMA) that provides dependable, passive protection. This restored security to 51 vulnerable properties, safeguarded essential transport links and revived the conditions vital to Bewdley’s visitor‑driven economy.
Combining engineering excellence with heritage sensitivity, the scheme’s glass‑topped walls, integrated flood gates and bespoke seal to the Grade I listed bridge protect the town while preserving its treasured riverside character.
Sustainability shaped every decision, achieving major carbon reductions and delivering lasting community value through extensive local labour, social initiatives and education outreach. The result is a resilient, sensitive and forward‑looking FRMA that strengthens Bewdley for future generations.
