What does it take to deliver complex tunnelling works beneath London while working alongside operational Underground infrastructure?
In this lecture Matt Hubble shares practical lessons from major London projects, exploring how complex SCL (sprayed concrete lining) tunnel geometries can be successfully planned, set out and delivered through strong communication and quality management.
He'll also look at the challenges of working on and around London Underground assets, from design development and approvals to project-wide collaboration and stakeholder coordination, providing practical insights into the people, processes and planning behind successful underground engineering.
The event will also include a recap of BTSYM activities in 2026 and a look forward into 2027.
Following the lecture, there will be a networking session in the ICE Kendal's bar.

Matthew’s first tunnelling project was the Portsmouth waste water project which started last century, since then he has worked for major civil engineering contractors managing self delivery sections of works on large infrastructure projects such as HS1 (CTRL to the older people), Olympic Park, Tottenham Court Road station upgrade, Farringdon Crossrail tunnels, Bank station upgrade and Euston HS2 station.

This course is designed to give developing professionals a strong foundation in sustainable engineering, equipping them with the knowledge and practical skills to effectively integrate sustainability into their work.

Aimed at students, this series of seven webinars which runs until May 2027 will enable you to learn about professional life from recent graduates from across the industry.
