Overview

Current steel construction codes and designers focus primarily on individual component tolerances (e.g., beams, columns), ignoring how small deviations compound across large, complex structures. Accumulated deviations can severely misalign façades, lift shafts, MEP systems, and finishes, leading to costly delays, disputes, and rework. Estimates of upto 25% impact on project Cost and Schedule are encountered in real projects caused by Tolerance and Constructability issues.

Constructability is also another related subject which is not typically fully researched and mitigated at early stages of projects. Design Engineers tend to under-represent tolerances at the Design Phase of projects, which leads to lost mitigation opportunities. A discussion on a new hierarchy of tolerances for future standards that integrates components, assemblies, overall global structure, and functional interfaces is proposed in this lecture.

Sushanta Singh Takhellambam

Sushanta Singh Takhellambam has over 26 years of experience in structural design, construction, and multidisciplinary design management across India, Oman, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

He has participated or led the engineering delivery of major international airports, tall buildings, industrial facilities, complex steel structures, façades, and large mixed-use developments. As Structural Steel Subject Matter Expert (SME) at L&T B&F EDRC, he oversees the technical correctness and quality of structural steel design.

His landmark assignments include Mumbai and Bangalore international airports, ITC One Colombo’s twin towers and 54-metre skybridge, and the Oman Botanic Garden, where he delivered innovative solutions to complex design and construction challenges. He also represents L&T on Bureau of Indian Standards steel panels.
