Overview

Keeping it Civil is a relaxed lunchtime series bringing together professionals from across the civil engineering industry for informal, fireside chat–style discussions. In each session, a guest speaker will briefly introduce their background, share the journey that led them to their current role, and talk about what their day-to-day work in civil engineering involves.

Each talk will last around 20–25 minutes, followed by approximately 20 minutes of audience Q&A, giving attendees the opportunity to ask questions, explore different career journeys, and gain insight into the wide range of roles within the industry.

Whether you're curious about career paths, industry challenges, or what civil engineers actually do, Keeping it Civil offers an engaging way to learn directly from those working in the field.

This second talk will be presented by Ashima Anand providing an insight into her career working at the South Wales Trunk Road Agent.

Ashima Anand

Ashima Anand is a graduate civil engineer at Highways Wales (previously known as the South Wales Trunk Road Agent), where she supports the management and delivery of bridge maintenance projects across Wales' strategic road network.

Working on the client side of the industry, Ashima collaborates closely with consultants, contractors and other stakeholders to deliver infrastructure projects, highlighting the importance of effective communication and teamwork in engineering.

Ashima has worked on a range of schemes, including bridge concrete repairs, expansion joint replacements and debris protection systems.

She studied a BEng in civil engineering and an MSc in Structural Engineering and is currently working towards professional chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Alongside her engineering role, Ashima is actively involved in professional development initiatives, mentoring and early career engagement within the civil engineering community. She currently serves as chair of the ICE Swansea and West Wales Early Careers Network, helping to support and inspire the next generation of engineers.

This presentation offers an insight into the experience of an engineer in the early stages of their career, exploring the transition from university to industry and providing a perspective on working within the public sector.
