The A61 Old Mill Lane widening scheme is being conducted by Balfour Beatty as the Principal Contractor on behalf of South Yorkshire Combined Mayoral Authority (SYMCA).
The scheme aims to reduce journey times, ease congestion on the A61 and improve the reliability of bus journeys, including through a new five-lane layout and dedicated southbound bus lane on Old Mill Lane’s bridge. As part of future planning and sustainable transport planning, the existing footways are also being upgraded to accommodate combined pedestrian and cycle usage.
The existing road and bridge, spanning the River Dearne, are a known pinch point into Barnsley, both for traffic and as a utility corridor due to the high concentration of services located in this area.
