The Foss Islands disused railway line, also known as Rowntree’s Private Railway, offers a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of civil engineering, railway history and urban development within the city of York.
This guided walking event will take participants along the former railway alignment, examining historic bridge structures, retaining walls and earthworks, alongside examples of modern repairs and adaptations. Historic mapping will be used to illustrate how the railway was constructed through areas of significant archaeological and social importance, including former Roman and Anglo‑Saxon sites.
Led by local experienced engineers with specialist knowledge of bridge and railway infrastructure, the walk will provide insight into how legacy assets are managed, repurposed and integrated into today’s urban environment.
The informal outdoor setting encourages discussion across disciplines and experience levels.
The event is suitable for ICE members, early‑career engineers, students and those with an interest in civil engineering heritage and will conclude with an optional social gathering at a local venue.
This walk will be c.2.2 km from the start to Foss Islands road and along a footpath shared with other users including cyclists and walkers so is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Children and dogs are welcome.
The walk will be led by engineers with specialist experience in bridge engineering and railway infrastructure, offering both technical insight and historical context throughout the route.
