Nushma Juwaheer was elected as regional chair for 2023/24.
Nushma Juwaheer has been formally elected as the ICE North West chair at the region’s annual general meeting on 6 July 2023.
Juwaheer, a senior structural engineer at Mott MacDonald, is keen to use the position to tackle current sustainability issues and foster a more collaborative approach.
A member of the ICE for over a decade, having previously held a number of active committee roles alongside volunteering as a STEM ambassador, Juwaheer understands the importance of visibility.
“I believe in positive role models. They have helped me in my career so far and, in return, I hope that I can do the same for others, by showing what’s possible,” she said.
“Given the predicted supply challenge – it’s estimated that we need a quarter of a million new engineers over the next decade – it’s vital that we are effective in promoting civil engineering as a rewarding career with a variety of roles on offer.
“This way we can both recruit and retain a diverse workforce.”
A collaborative approach
Juwaheer is clear that collaboration is vital to future industry success, commenting: “The engineering sector encompasses a wide range of built environment professionals – it therefore makes perfect sense for us to work together to achieve more.
“This is particularly relevant in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As engineers, we need to change the way we design and operate, incorporating resilience and adaptability to help mitigate the effects of climate change.
“There are so many good examples and practices already in place. So, let’s work together, learn from each other, and embrace the journey.”
The ICE North West Committee
Other committee roles were confirmed for Lewis Brimmell, Vectos (part of SLR), and Kit Wolverson, Mott MacDonald, as senior vice chair and junior vice chair, respectively.
These posts, together with the network of regional branch and special interest group members, will support the regional chair as part of the ICE North West Committee.
