Incoming ICE President, David Porter, is looking for six student members on degree apprenticeships, graduate members, or technician members to join him as his Future Leaders.

The President’s Future Leaders Scheme is an opportunity for up-and-coming engineers and technicians to gain an insight into the top of the profession and to boost their careers.

Successful candidates will:

  • work on strategic ICE projects
  • attend key institution events
  • meet senior industry people and politicians
  • be mentored by the president
  • accompany him on regional visits

You, me and the ICE

David Porter has watched with interest as the President’s Future Leaders programme has evolved over the last 20 years since it was first established by Past President Gordon Masterton in 2005.

He’s been impressed by the opportunity it has given to so many and how they have used the skills they developed to further the civil engineering profession along with their own careers.

As he prepares for his year as president, he’s been reflecting on his career. He’s been employed by the Northern Ireland civil service for a few years longer than the Future Leaders programme has been running.

During this period, he has been an infrastructure client in highways and flood risk management.

He quickly realised that communicating the complexity of engineering processes to the public, their elected representatives and other stakeholders is a hugely important skill.

To select his Future Leaders, he’s interested in hearing how they think the profession can better communicate to a non-technical audience.

For example, he’d like to work with them to find better ways to convey the risk of floods, beyond describing them as a 1-in-a-100-year event.

They could also find a new way to explain why people need to reduce their water consumption or use social media to encourage them to switch to sustainable modes of transport.

Become an ICE President’s Future Leader

The deadline is 12pm (UK time) on Friday 18 July 2025.
