The Shaping Our Future City 2023 campaign ended with a poster exhibition and a mock stakeholders forum.
Hong Kong industry leaders have gathered to hear local students’ proposals for transforming a park into a hypothetical public sustainability exhibition centre.
As part of the Shaping Our Future City (SOFC) 2023 campaign, students attended site visits across Hong Kong to learn more about the latest technology and construction methods.
Based on their learnings, around 40 students from eight schools had been working on this scenario-based project competition under the guidance of facilitators, who are young engineers.
The competition concluded with a poster exhibition and a mock stakeholders forum on 14 May 2023.
Susanne Wong, Principal Assistant Secretary (Works) 1 at the Development Bureau of the HKSAR government, attended and delivered the opening speech as the guest of honour.
Industrial leaders from a wide spectrum of backgrounds were invited to evaluate the students’ performance as the panel of judges. ICE HKA committee members and industry talents also attended.
What did the competition involve?
Students sourced their design ideas from various technical visits, including those to the CIC i - Hub and T · Park where latest construction technologies and local waste management policy are showcased.
They participated in the Walt Disney Imagineering Storytelling Workshop and engineering workshop to train their presentation skills and engineering thinking skills four weeks before the presentation.
To showcase what they learned, the students presented their redevelopment proposals at the final event within exhibition booths supported by visual aids like posters and a handmade model.
To promote peer support, a popular vote award was given to the most popular booth, chosen by all participants.
In the afternoon, the students actively took part at the mock stakeholders forum, where most of them enjoyed their assigned roles, raising potential concerns of their corresponding stakeholder in the hypothetical project.
Hearing from the judges
Towards the end of the day, the judges gave students advice on green building design and offered recommendations on how to present more coherently.
They also shared their passion in working in the construction industry and encouraged them to choose civil engineering for their further studies.
