Hong Kong delegates from the Graduates and Students division learned about digitalisation and innovation during a visit to Helsinki.
Members of the ICE Hong Kong Association Graduates and Students division (HKA G&S) visited Finland to learn about the country’s sustainable infrastructure and digitalisation efforts.
Forming the ICE HKA G&S Nordic Delegation 2023, the members first stopped in Stockholm, Sweden before ending their travels in Helsinki.
Safeguarding water for Helsinki
Delegates first visited Viikinmäki Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), which is the largest WWTP in the Nordic region.
They learned the multi-stage treatment process, which plays a critical role in safeguarding the environment for 800,000 people in Helsinki and its seven neighbouring municipalities.
Sustainable transportation
Next, the delegates visited the Crown Bridge tramway project.
They had an insightful discussion with the construction and design team of the project and witnessed the construction of new bridges and a light rail.
This project will create a seaside tram link and cycle path to the beautiful island of Laajasalo, which will benefit the local community and promote sustainable transportation.
Digital developments
On the last day in Helsinki, the delegates visited the KIRAHub office, where they met Teemu Lehtinen, the CEO of KIRAHub and Jussi Ago, CEO of Flow Technologies Oy.
They presented the latest digitalisation developments in the Finnish construction industry as well as how the real time data system can improve information flow and enhance construction site efficiency.
Next, delegates were introduced to automotive and mechanical engineering by Oscar Nissin, innovation director of smart mobility at Metropolia University.
They had the opportunity to check out the latest smart mobility technologies, including the Formula Student team, Robo Garage, and AIoT Garage platforms.
This visit highlighted the importance of collaboration between different fields in creating innovative solutions.
In addition to these technical visits, delegates also had the opportunity to visit Helsinki Cathedral, Sibelius Monument, and Senate Square.
Furthermore, delegates visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Fortress of Suomenlinna.
