The ICE has launched an interactive careers website to inspire students to change the world through civil engineering.
Designed for young people exploring future career opportunities, ICE Futures brings these to life with immersive storytelling and relatable characters.
What is ICE Futures?
Replacing the Inspire platform, ICE Futures is a free, interactive careers resource that helps students, schools, colleges, teachers and careers advisers discover the rich variety of jobs that civil engineering offers. It achieves this through games, multiple choice questions, real world scenarios and insightful resources.
It aims to educate, engage and inspire young people at a critical stage of their early career journey and offers a student-friendly introduction to civil engineering.
The site follows three characters – Mae, Omar and Robyn – as they progress through their civil engineering careers within a dynamic city called Brighthaven.
Each character’s career path is informed by different interests that shape the city’s evolution from 2025 to 2075. The changes reflect the positive impact of their work, allowing students to see the transformative power of civil engineering.
Why was ICE Futures created?
The demand for qualified civil engineers is growing. They design our smart cities, aid climate resilience and provide efficient transport, clean energy, safe cities, homes to live in and so much more.
ICE Futures helps young people understand how a career in this field will provide them with the opportunity to have an impact across these vital activities.
The website is also designed to support teachers and career advisers. This easy-to-use, curriculum-friendly resource aligns with the UK’s Gatsby careers guidance benchmarks one and four. It demonstrates how key school subjects such as maths and science align with engineering careers.
The platform also supports the government’s efforts to improve students’ understanding of career opportunities, addressing concerns that one in three children are unaware of the jobs available to them after they leave school.
By providing a means of exploration, it helps prepare students for the workplace and informs them about their future options.
‘A powerful tool’
The future of civil engineering depends on inspiring the next generation, explained Sean Harris, deputy director general and director of membership. “ICE Future serves as a powerful tool in achieving this goal.”
“By making career exploration interactive and engaging, it enables young people to appreciate the real-world impact of civil engineering,” he said.
“This resource underscores the ICE’s commitment to education and to cultivating a diverse, skilled talent pipeline for the industry.”
