The ICE is seeking new trustees to oversee three portfolios.
The ICE is governed by a board of twelve trustees, four of which are directly elected by eligible members.
Trusteeship comes with significant responsibilities and duties as set out by the UK Charity Commission.
Trustees are responsible for all aspects of the institution, including the implementation and oversight of the ICE’s strategy, regulatory and legal compliance, as well as maintaining the reputation and standing of the institution.
The primary role of a trustee is to act in the best interests of the institution to maintain its reputation, set its vision and strategy, and to direct its activities. The duties and responsibilities of an ICE trustee can be found in the trustee role description.
Each trustee is also responsible for a portfolio. This year the portfolios that fall vacant are learning society, professional conduct and ethics, and policy and external affairs.
The ICE holds an annual ballot in June and eligible members will be asked this year to elect three individuals to these portfolios.
Trustee - learning society
This trustee will chair the Learning Society Committee. This appointment provides governance oversight of the institution’s learning society activity and knowledge programme.
This will require the ability to identify the key knowledge issues, existing and emerging.
It’s likely, but not essential, that this trustee will be a professionally qualified civil engineer, ideally with a background in academia.
Experience of contribution to research and innovation is desirable but not essential.
Previous engagement with ICE’s specialist knowledge societies or communities of practice would be helpful.
Trustee - professional conduct and ethics
This trustee will chair the ICE Ethics Panel.
The appointment oversees all aspects of the institution’s professional conduct regime. The trustee isn’t a member of the Professional Conduct Panel or Disciplinary Board.
It’s highly desirable that this trustee has knowledge and in depth understanding of professional conduct processes (either from the ICE or other professional bodies).
Legal training isn’t required but it would be an advantage (especially if that experience could be more broadly drawn on by the trustee board when debating other issues of note).
Experience as either an arbitrator or adjudicator is desirable but not essential.
Trustee - policy and external affairs
The trustee for policy and external affairs helps shape the ICE’s policy positions across the full suite of issues on which the institution comments.
A very good understanding of how governments operate, in the UK and overseas, is essential.
This work is, by its nature, collaborative and persuasive. There are many organisations that seek to do the same, and demonstrating experience of building alliances, consensus and cutting through to the core of an issue is highly desirable.
Direct experience of persuading politicians and officials to implement policy changes is highly desirable.
A broad understanding of how international bodies such as the United Nations, OECD, development banks and similar bodies operate, while not essential, is highly desirable.
Appointing high-calibre people from diverse backgrounds with relevant skills, knowledge and experience to the boards of the ICE will help us to ensure that our work is more effective, resilient and accountable. For that reason, we positively welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
