Overview

Peter Radford, Somerset’s former chief bridge engineer, explores some of the world’s most famous bridge collapses, the events that led to them and the lessons learned.

Historically, as the design of bridges has evolved, some failures have occurred, particularly when spanning challenging terrain such as large rivers, valleys and ravines.

This talk looks at what went wrong, how the industry responded, and how the lessons of failure have helped make bridges safer and more reliable for everyone who uses them today.

This event has been organised by ICE Taunton City Club.

Peter Radford

Peter Radford CEng FICE inherited his passion for engineering from his father. He studied and started his post graduate consulting career in the early 1980s in London, building expertise in the field of historic structures working on Thames Bridges, London Underground and early suspension bridges. While still in his twenties, Peter authored London Underground’s new structures inspection manual.

Peter later moved to the South West, becoming Somerset’s chief bridge engineer looking after over 2,000 bridges, as well as holding other senior positions. He also chaired the National Highways and Transport (NHT) Network, the National Highways Benchmarking Club and ICE South West.

Peter’s work has been recognised numerous prestigious awards including an outstanding contribution award from the NHT, a national historic bridge and infrastructure award, two national ‘Green Apple’ environmental awards, two ICE South West project of the year awards and the international ‘Fleming Award’ for geotechnical engineering excellence.

Peter, now semi-retired, is an associate director of global consultant, Turner and Townsend, leading work to drive social value from infrastructure.

He lives in a self-restored Georgian house in Somerset with wife of 35 years Kathy; where she allows him to indulge his passions for self-build projects, engineering history and vintage Alvis motor cars!
