Design ID
principal engineer
Amy Dillon is a Chartered Civil Engineer and principal engineer at Design ID. A University of Nottingham graduate, she began her career with Sir Robert McAlpine and later worked at Amec Foster Wheeler and Farrans Construction, where she was a Senior Site Engineer on the Northern Spire Bridge in her home town of Sunderland.
Since joining Design ID in 2019, Amy has worked on a variety of Projects including Crossrail, and leads health and safety and training initiatives for the practice. In her spare time she also runs The Big Bridge, a non-profit STEM outreach programme using a 13m long model cable-stayed bridge to inspire schoolchildren. Her contributions to engineering and education have earned her the 2024 STEM Champion Award , the 2023 Construction News Rising Star title, and the RAEng Young Engineer of the Year Award in 2020. In 2017, she was named one of the Top 50 Women in Engineering by the Women’s Engineering Society and The Telegraph.
Amy is active in ICE committees and has a passion for Development Engineering, having led a project to install a small-scale hydro-solar power scheme in a rural village in Malawi and volunteered in Kenya with social enterprise Sanivation to expand their operations.
Mott MacDonald
principal structural engineer
John is a principal structural engineer for Mott MacDonald in their Belfast office. He spent much of his early career in mainland UK working on projects in the oil and gas industry, defence and nuclear.
Whilst predominantly office based, his site experience has taken him everywhere from climbing ladders in gas power stations, to walking around redundant nuclear reactor buildings, inspecting the soffits of offshore structures, and driving on a live RAF runway.
Current projects include railways and bridges work. Working in a variety of different environments affords the opportunity and experience to assess risks and hazards both before and during the works.

What happens when a bridge fails and what can engineers learn from it? This talk explores famous case studies, examining how the lessons of history have shaped safer bridge design.

Technical Curiosity is a key pillar of building a successful career, and Pablo Gugel, director of sustainability and AI at Bryden Wood, will present and lead a discussion on Technical Curiosity: Broadening your perspective.

Aligning with publication of Ecosystem Strategy paper, this webinar explores how to implement aligned, integrated approaches that enhance infrastructure delivery, sharing Project 13 adopter insights and case studies demonstrating application, challenges and lessons learned.
