Engineering asset management for bridges and tunnels relies on a four-stage lifecycle framework: routine or advanced inspection, data-driven condition assessment, precise material diagnostics, and structural retrofitting to extend operational life and prevent failure.

There are opportunities of employment for engineers and technologists quite in number, in government, consultancy, contracting and supplies, provided they are trained in the use of these methods.

This training course, delivered by ICE and the Pakistan Engineering Council, is designed to provide participants with a systematic understanding of the methods used for the inspection, condition assessment, diagnostics, and retrofitting of bridges and tunnels.

Course Content:

1. Routine and in-depth structural health monitoring
2. Distress signs in concrete, steel, and masonry
3. Visual techniques, non-destructive testing (NDT), and load rating analysis.
4. Checking lining integrity, leakage detection, and ground-support interaction.
5. Categorising defects and prioritising maintenance needs based on risk
6. Interpreting field data to find hidden cracks, corrosion, and material fatigue
7. Strengthening girders, seismic upgrading, and replacing bearings or joints.
8. Grouting voids, shotcrete liners, and waterproofing systems.
9. Using fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP)
