2027 ICE plan

The director general and secretary (DG&S), Janet Young, presented the first draft of the 2027 plan.

As we enter the second year of the new five-year strategy, the 2027 plan builds on the work being carried out in 2026.

It also aims to maintain the momentum in core areas of the ICE’s activity such as member engagement and knowledge and insights.

Trustees provided feedback on the draft plan and were particularly keen that we maximise the impact of some of the ideas presented, such as the marking of the 10th anniversary of the Grenfell Tower disaster next year and the 200th anniversary of the ICE’s Royal Charter in 2028.

The draft plan was also discussed at the council meeting in July, and it will be finalised ahead of approval at the trustee board meeting in September.

The DG&S also provided an update on the progress being made on the 2026 plan and what will be delivered during the remainder of this year.

TTL update

Chair of the TTL Board, Rachel White, provided the annual TTL update.

She started by explaining the purpose and governance of TTL to provide trustees with the context of how they operate. She then went on to talk about TTL’s progress against their five-year strategy and their focus on the new NEC digital product.

TTL’s managing director, Andrea Naylor, outlined how the investment in marketing and sales has paid off with profits ahead of target for the year. Trustees discussed the need to ensure there was sufficient reinvestment of profit into TTL to allow for future diversification and continued growth.

Trustees recognise the significant contribution TTL makes to the ICE and thanked Rachel, the board and TTL staff for all their work.

Landscape review of Engineering Knowledge

The director of policy and external affairs (DPEA), Sam Gould, and the chief membership officer (CMO), Jo Horton, talked through the plan to review the structure of committees and groups that support the ICE’s engineering knowledge programme.

The aim of the review is to:

• identify any gaps in the current system
• ensure that the knowledge generation system is aligned to the ICE strategy
• clarify the roles and responsibilities of member led groups
• identify any areas for further collaboration or simplification

The review will be led by the director of knowledge services, Carol Brooks, with the trustee with responsibility for the learning society, and chair of the Learning Society Committee (LSC), Dr Ohis Ilalokhoin, acting as the sponsor.

The terms of reference have been signed off by the trustee board and the LSC, and the review is now underway with a report due to be with trustees in Q1 2027.

The format of our engineering knowledge offer will also be considered by this review to ensure that it is relevant to students and early careers professionals, as the way they consume information has changed rapidly in recent years.

The volume of activity currently undertaken in the carbon and climate space was highlighted, including PAS 2080, a new PAS 3090 for climate adaptation pathways and the ICE Carbon Management Plan.

The trustee board therefore agreed to set up a new Carbon and Climate Advisory Group to report to the LSC.

And finally…

This was a very constructive trustee board meeting, and it is encouraging to see the progress being made by staff and members working in collaboration.
